Mary Deeming

Mary Deeming was first introduced to Japanese Art by her Great Aunt who had a collection of Art Magazines compiled by Bing in the 19th Century. She moved to Asia in the mid 70's and was able to develop her avid interest in Oriental artifacts, studying the various art forms and the history associated with each subject.

Eventually Mary opened a Gallery in Hong Kong specialising in textiles, dolls, swords and woodblock prints. It was here that she met David Caplan of Mita Arts, Tokyo and exhibited his woodblock prints in monthly exhibitions.

After returning to the UK in the 90's Mary continued to work with David's prints curating exhibitions internationally and in the UK. She is also a regular participant at Olympia's "Fine Arts & Antiques Fair" in June and the popular "Antiques for Everyone" at the NEC Birmingham and Earls Court.

David Caplan

David Caplan of Mita Arts, Tokyo, has resided in Japan since 1962. He began to seriously collect ukiyo-e prints in 1968, and soon became one of the most active collectors and dealers in the field.

David was one of the founding directors of the Japan Ukiyo-e Dealers Association about twenty years ago, and is also an executive director of the Japan Ukiyo-e Society. With his son Ken, almost monthly overseas buying and selling trips are made and every major overseas auction is covered, whilst in Japan, fifteen monthly auctions are attended.

Damian Christinger
